Australia expects sufficient east coast gas supply in Q1 2027
AKP Phnom Penh, the October 9, 2026--
Australia's east coast gas market is expected to have sufficient supply to meet domestic demand in the first quarter of 2027, with a projected surplus of between 5 and 15 petajoules (PJ), the government said.
In a statement released on Friday, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources said the latest forecasts from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Australian Energy Market Operator indicated that gas supply would comfortably meet household and industrial needs from January to March 2027.
According to the ACCC's September 2026 Gas Inquiry report, the projected surplus is 9 PJ lower than previously forecast, mainly due to declining gas production in southern states and increased export demand.
Despite the downward revision, the department said the east coast gas market can meet domestic demand, maintain gas exports without affecting local supply, and replenish gas storage facilities.
Given the positive supply outlook, the Australian government will not initiate a formal review of potential gas supply shortfalls for the quarter.
The department said it would continue conducting quarterly assessments of domestic gas supply until the government's Domestic Gas Reservation Scheme comes into effect.
