Cambodia to Observe National Population Day Every July 11
AKP Phnom Penh, May 22, 2026 -- The Royal Government of Cambodia has designated July 11 each year as National Population Day, according to a sub-decree released to the public this morning.
The observance aims to raise public awareness and encourage collective efforts to address demographic changes in Cambodia and build a resilient and harmonious population, the sub-decree stated.
The Ministry of Planning has been tasked with organising National Population Day in cooperation with the Office of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, relevant ministries and institutions, local and international NGOs, the private sector, educational institutions, and other stakeholders.
The sub-decree also encourages all stakeholders to participate in promoting public awareness and addressing demographic challenges.
Based on the 2019 national census, Cambodia’s population stood at 15,288,489. Projections indicate that by 2050, around 15.5 percent of the population will be under 15 years old, 67.5 percent will be between 15 and 64, and approximately 17.1 percent will be aged 65 and above.
The elderly population is expected to outnumber the younger population after 2050, potentially leading to labour shortages. In response, the Royal Government has been strengthening youth skills development, encouraging higher birth rates, and expanding social protection measures, among other initiatives.
