AKP Phnom Penh, April 15, 2026 —
Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Hun Many officially launched the "Nokor Sankranta" festivities Tuesday, emphasising a spirit of national unity and unwavering support for Cambodia’s armed forces and displaced persons during the Khmer New Year celebrations.
Speaking to reporters at the historic Wat Phnom cultural site, H.E. Hun Many, who also serves as Minister of Civil Service and President of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC), stated that the annual event serves as more than a cultural celebration; it is a symbol of the nation’s collective identity.
"Across every venue of Nokor Sankranta, the spirit remains with the nation, with our armed forces, and with our displaced compatriots in all circumstances," H.E. Hun Many said following the traditional ceremony to welcome the New Year Angel.
The Deputy Prime Minister was accompanied by Phnom Penh Governor H.E. Khuong Sreng. The event marks a significant collaboration between the UYFC and municipal authorities to preserve Khmer heritage.
During the interview, H.E. Hun Many extended his highest respects and well-wishes to Their Majesties the King and Queen Mother, praying for their continued longevity and health as the symbolic shade for the Cambodian people.
He took a moment to specifically acknowledge the sacrifices of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, including the army, police, and gendarmerie. He also extended thoughts to their families and those currently residing in displaced persons' camps, wishing them prosperity and peace in the new year.
"I urge all citizens to maintain their trust in the Royal Government," the Deputy Prime Minister added. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, efforts to improve the livelihoods and daily well-being of all people—including our forces and the displaced—remain a constant and tireless priority."
The 2026 Nokor Sankranta festival, celebrating the Year of the Horse, will run for six days from April 14 to 19 across the capital.
Organised by the UYFC and the Phnom Penh Administration, the event features over 20 major cultural, artistic, and religious exhibitions.
Key festivities are concentrated at Wat Phnom, the cultural village near the Night Market, Vattanac Park, and the Chaktomuk Walk Street.
The latter, stretching from the Night Market to the Royal Palace, features numerous stalls showcasing Khmer products and three concert stages designed to foster public celebration.
