Cambodia, France to Upgrade Relations to Strategic Partnership
AKP Phnom Penh, April 09, 2026 -- Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has praised French President H.E. Emmanuel Macron for his warm hospitality and productive discussions on strengthening bilateral ties.
“Appreciate President Emmanuel Macron for your warm hospitality and very productive discussions to strengthen the bilateral relationship between our two countries, especially as we work towards upgrading our diplomatic relations to a Strategic Partnership in the near future,” the Prime Minister wrote on his official social media platforms this afternoon.
Samdech Thipadei also reaffirmed his readiness to welcome President Macron to Cambodia later this year.
“I look forward to welcoming President Macron on an official visit to Cambodia and to his participation in the 20th Francophonie Summit, which Cambodia will host in November 2026,” he added.
Speaking at a press conference at Techo International Airport at noon upon the Prime Minister’s return from France, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister H.E. Jean-François Tan said the bilateral talks between Samdech Thipadei and President Macron were conducted in a friendly and sincere atmosphere.
He noted that both leaders exchanged views on further strengthening friendship and expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including security, trade, and culture, etc.
Both sides also shared a common view on maintaining global peace and stability based on respect for international law, multilateralism, dialogue, as well as the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, he underlined.
Regarding President Macron’s upcoming visit to Cambodia, H.E. Jean-François Tan described it as historic, noting that in the long history of bilateral relations, only one French President—General Charles de Gaulle—has previously visited Cambodia, in 1966.
